DIY Packing Tips – Part 2: Furniture, Specialty Items & Moving Day Essentials

In our last blog we covered packing basics, labeling tips, and how to protect fragile items. Now, let’s talk about furniture, specialty items, and those last-minute details that can make or break your moving day.

Packing isn’t just about putting things in boxes, it’s about preparing your home for a smooth transition. Here’s how to do it like a pro!

Packing Your Furniture the Right Way

Furniture is bulky, heavy, and needs extra care to avoid damage.

✅ Empty your filing cabinets. They are too heavy when full, and the inner mechanisms can break during transport.

✅ Dressers? It depends! Some can stay packed, while others (especially pressboard ones) should be emptied to prevent structural damage.

✅ Disassemble large bookshelves. Cube-style IKEA shelves, for example, won’t survive the move unless taken apart.

Handle Lamps & Electronics with Care

Lamps and electronics need extra attention when packing.

✅ Lampshades are extremely fragile. Remove them, pack them separately, or better yet, take them with you.

✅ Flat-screen TVs are NOT covered by insurance unless packed in the original box or professionally packed (we charge $75 per TV for this service). Otherwise, they will only be wrapped in blankets. Movers do not remove them from the wall.

💡 Pro Tip: Consider moving valuable or delicate electronics in your car for extra peace of mind.

Keep Track of Small Parts

Nothing is worse than losing screws, bolts, or furniture pieces in the move.

✅ Use baggies to hold screws and small parts.

✅ Tape the bag directly to the item they belong to or put them all in a clearly labeled “Set-Up Box.”

Packing Art, Mirrors & Fragile Décor

Your artwork and mirrors need extra padding to avoid cracks and breakage.

✅ Wrap all glass items in bubble wrap before placing them in a box.

✅ Use picture/mirror boxes whenever possible.

✅ If an item is too fragile, move it yourself for added security.

Last-Minute Packing & Moving Day Essentials

No matter how well you plan, there are always last-minute items to pack.

✅ Keep extra boxes and tape handy for last-minute packing.

✅ Pack a “First Night” box with essentials like toiletries, medications, pajamas, and important documents.

✅ Movers do NOT take flammable items, open food, or liquids—plan accordingly.

Packing is the foundation of a smooth move.

If done right, your belongings will arrive safely, your unpacking will be easier, and your stress levels will stay low.
