DIY Packing Tips – Part 1: The Packing Basics

Packing is both an art and a science. It’s the foundation of a smooth, stress-free move. When done right, your belongings will arrive safe, organized, and easy to unpack. The best part? You can do this yourself!

As professional movers, we’ve seen it all, and we’re here to help. Today we are sharing our top DIY packing tips to make your move efficient and hassle-free. Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, these expert strategies will set you up for success.

Tape is Your Friend

Before you start packing, invest in quality packing tape. Weak tape leads to weak boxes, and weak boxes lead to broken belongings.

✅ Use 2-3 strips of tape along the bottom seam of each box. This reinforcement prevents the bottom from caving in.

❌ Don’t just crisscross the lids on top with tape - this won’t hold!

✅ If you are using plastic bins, tape the lids shut to prevent them from popping open in transit.

Pack Boxes Like a Pro

A properly packed box is full, tight, and square. This ensures it won’t cave in when stacked.

✅ Fill every box to the top. If there’s space, add packing paper or soft material to keep everything snug.

✅ Keep boxes under 60 lbs (or whatever you can comfortably lift).

✅ Remember, boxes get stacked, so ask yourself: Can this box support weight on top?

Label for a Stress-Free Unpack

Good labeling makes all the difference when it’s time to settle into your new space.

✅ Label each box by the room it’s going to, not just where it came from.

✅ Write labels on the sides, not just the top - so they’re visible when stacked.

✅ Add a quick hint on the top (e.g., “Kitchen - Coffee Maker & Mugs”) to help you find essentials fast.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Packing Books

Books are heavy! The last thing you want is a box that’s too heavy to lift.

✅ Pack books horizontally to prevent damage to the spines.

✅ Use small boxes to keep them manageable.

✅ Save large boxes for lighter items like bedding and clothing.

Plates, Glasses & Fragile Items

Packing fragile items properly saves heartbreak later.

✅ Plates should be packed on their edges (never flat).

✅ Glasses should be upside down, wrapped in packing paper.

✅ Ask yourself: If I dropped this box, would my items survive?

Pro Tip: Use unprinted packing paper to avoid ink transfer from newspapers on your dishes.

Say No to Garbage Bags

❌ Do NOT use garbage bags to pack.

Why? Movers might mistake them for actual garbage, and they rip easily. Everything should be packed in a sturdy box.
